Professional background

Richard van Kranenburg

2016 – 2026 Wageningen University – Laboratory of Microbiology.

Special Professor of Bacterial Cell Factories.

Establishing a new research group within the Bacterial Genetics Group of the Laboratory of Microbiology at Wageningen University
Writing and granting of an NWO PhD project proposal between Corbion and Wageningen University, enabling the start of a new research line
Successfully leading the project that resulted in Corbion acquiring the project results, funding a subsequent PhD project that resulted in licensing of IP, thus initiating a third PhD project
Acting as promotor and supervisor for 8 PhD candidates, providing them with the freedom to explore and coaching them, akin to my role at Corbion
Delivering seven PhDs projects, all of which have resulted in successful careers within academia and/or industry and publication in reputable journals

I started my Corbion career with setting-up the molecular biology lab and the strain development team. Over the years my team and I have contributed to many strategic innovation projects including:

Development of D-lactic acid strains
Development of L-lactic acid strains able to use alternative substrates such as lignocellulose-derived sugars
Development of succinic acid production strains
Development of furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) production strains
Development of propionic acid production strains
Development of production strains for alternative building block chemicals
Genetic tool development for non-model organisms, including transformation protocols, CRISPR-Cas, recombineering, classical mutagenesis, and adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE).
Improvement of robustness of production strains
Setting-up molecular detection tools and pipelines for fermentation monitoring, strain identification and biosafety analyses.

I have participated in many public-private-partnerships including Wageningen Centre for Food Sciences/Top Institute Food & Nutrition, The Kluyver Center for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation, BE-Basic and many NWO/SENTER projects.

I have represented Corbion at EuropaBio, HollandBio, the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA), the CEN/NEN project on Algae and Algae Products and collaborated with my public affair colleagues for our contributions to public consultations and other ways of safeguarding Corbion’s interests in future policies.
I have closely collaborated with our regulatory team on biotechnology dossiers and biosafety statements.
I have supported our IP team with filing and office actions of strain development-related dossiers.
